Unit 4 Online Practice Exercises

Unit 4
1 .  First Conditional
USE:
a. Nature: Open condition, what is said in the condition is possible.
b. Time: This condition refers either to present or to future time.
If he is late, we will have to go without him.
If my mother knows about this, we are in serious trouble.

ü  A first conditional sentence consists of two clauses, an "if" clause and a main clause:

if clause
main clause
If you study hard,
you will pass the test.

ü  If the "if" clause comes first, a comma is usually used. If the "if" clause comes second, there is no need for a comma:

main clause
if clause
You will pass the test
if you study hard.

ü  We use different verb forms in each part of a first conditional:

if clause
if + subject + simple present verb
main clause
subject + will + verb

Using the First Conditional
The first conditional is used to talk about things which are possible in the present or the future -- things which may happen:

Example
Explanation
If it's sunny, we'll go to the park.
Maybe it will be sunny -- that's possible.
Paula will be sad if Juan leaves.
Maybe Juan will leave -- that's possible.
If you cook the supper, I'll wash the dishes.
Maybe you will cook the supper -- that's possible.

I Might Fall Back Down Again

This video is from the movie Ice Princess and the song is Get Up by Superchick. The songs expresses the future possibility of falling and getting up again many times before you succeed.

I'm not afraid to fall
It means I climbed up high
To fall is not to fail
You fail when you don't try
I'm not afraid to fall
I might just learn to fly and
I will spread these wings of mine

If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
We get up anyway
If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
And I might fall back down again
We'll just jump and see, even if it's the 20th time
we'll just jump and see if we can fly

I'm not afraid to fall
And hear I told you so
Don't want to rock the boat
But I just had to know
Just a greener side
Or can I touch the sky
But either way I will have tried

If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
We get up anyway
If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
And I might fall back down again
We'll just jump and see, even if it's the 30th time
We'll just jump and see if we can fly

I'm not afraid to fall
I've fallen many times
They laughed when I fell down
But I have dared to climb
I'm not afraid to fall
I know I'll fall again
But I can win this in the end

If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
We get up anyway
If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
And I might fall back down again
We'll just jump and see, even if it's the 40th time
We'll just jump and see if we can fly

If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
We get up anyway
If I get up I might fall back down again
So let's get up come on
If I get up I might fall back down again
And I might fall back down again

Discussions About Learning English

Antimoon publishes an archive of an old forum on learning English
Look at this one about the difference betwee "outside" and "outside of".
My favorite contribution is Foxie's:
Besides meaning 'outside', in colloquial English 'outside of' can mean 'except for'. My favorite 'outside of' saying is "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."

I Used to Believe

Take alook at the I Used to Believe site. It is a collection of things that people used to believe when they were children, like:

I used to think that people would make up songs in the shower, then someone else would come in random bathrooms and record it, then played it on the radio. for a long time i would make up songs and sing them as loud as i could hoping that someone would recerd mine, and play it on the radio station. (:

There are lots more. See if any of the things you used to believe are listed.

Homonyms

Here is a homonymical poem from Alan Cooper's page, All About Homonyms. If you read it aloud it sounds fine, but all the words in italics have been substituted for a homonym. Can you figure out which spellings should have been used?

An Ode to the Spelling Chequer

Prays the Lord for the spelling chequer

That came with our pea sea!

Mecca mistake and it puts you rite

Its so easy to ewes, you sea.

I never used to no, was it e before eye?
(Four sometimes its eye before e.)
But now I've discovered the quay to success
It's as simple as won, too, free!

Sew watt if you lose a letter or two,
The whirled won't come two an end!
Can't you sea? It's as plane as the knows on yore face
S. Chequer's my very best friend

I've always had trubble with letters that double
"Is it one or to S's?" I'd wine
But now, as I've tolled you this chequer is grate
And its hi thyme you got won, like mine.

—Janet E. Byford

Stand by Me

Ben E.King's recording of Stand by Me went to number one on the R&B charts and was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. charts twice—in its original release in 1961, when it peaked at #4, and a 1986 rerelease coinciding with its use as the theme song for the movie of the same name, when it peaked at #9, and also in an advertisement for Levi Jeans. Stand by Me was ranked number 122 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All TimeThe song uses a version of the common chord progression now called the 50s progression, also known as a "turn-around," which have been called the "'Stand by Me' changes" after the song.
There have been over 400 recorded versions of "Stand By Me." Some of the more notable ones include:

  • Muhammad Ali released a 45 rpm version of the song, a track which also featured on his 1963 Columbia album I Am the Greatest(released under the name Cassius Clay).
  • Otis Redding recorded a version for his album Pain in My Heart
  • Jimi Hendrix also recorded his version that is most like the original, but with more use of the guitar.
  • John Lennon recorded his version of the song for his 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll. Lennon's cover of "Stand by Me" was his last hit prior to his five-year retirement from the music industry.
  • U2 has covered it many times while on tour, and once with Bruce Springsteen during the The Joshua Tree Tour.
  • Timon and Pumbaa performed a rendition, though during the song sequence when Timon's singing, Pumbaa ends up getting into dangerous situations, as we can see here.
